The pure product of Mercaptoacetic acid is a colorless transparent liquid with an unpleasant odor, and the industrial product is often colorless to slightly yellow. Mercaptoacetic acid is miscible with water, ethanol and ether. Mercaptoacetic acid oxidizes rapidly when exposed to the air, and a small amount of metal ions can accelerate the oxidation process. An aqueous solution of thioglycolic acid with a concentration of less than 70% is generally stable at room temperature.
